Cheltenham Minster

IMG_1275.jpeg

The Minster is the oldest building in Cheltenham and holds great historic importance to the town but despite its Grade I listing and many attempts by local communities to have more recognition given to the site, many more recent developments in the surrounding area have left the church relatively forgotten. Issues with antisocial behaviour and a lack of upkeep reduce visitor numbers as the grounds feel unsafe and unappealing.

This project proposes several improvements to the site, creating a connection between Clarence Street and the busy Lower High Street through the Minster grounds which encourages visitors and highlights the Minster as the jewel that it is. The proposal includes and activities lawn, meeting spaces, biodiversity garden, and space for display of public art which serves to work well with the surrounding Art Gallery, Children's Library, and proposed Workshop Scheme. The idea is to also improve footpaths and lighting in the space to make it more accessible and will be presented in a way which celebrates the space's cultural and creative connections.
